Jesse was the youngest son of Revolutionary Soldier, Thomas Fox (1725- 1822), and Elizabeth Hancock (1731 - 1823). Jesse Fox evidently first settled at Hollow Creek in Lexington County, in the neighborhood of John Howard's store which later became known as "John Howard's Grog Shop". While living at that place he was a justice of the peace and a manager of elections during a number of years prior to 1822. Being opposed to the sale and drinking of intoxicants (as recited by some of his grandchildren in later years), at about 1822 he moved from Hollow Creek to the fork of Lightwood Knot Creek and Chinquapin Creek(these creeks being the headwaters of North Edisto River) and settled on a 670-acre tract of land which he owned. This land lay on both sides (partly in the present Lexington County and partly in the present Aiken County) of Chinquapin Creek and his homestead and family graveyard were located on the north side (in the present Lexington County) of that creek, being a mile or so above its junction with Lightwood Knot Creek. This location was a few miles below the present town of Batesburg, S.C, and about four miles above the Steedman's old family home (on National Highway No. 178) in Lexington County. Jesse Fox and his wife lie buried in the family graveyard.
After his death the 670 acres of land (except one square acre around and including the graveyard) and buildings thereon were bought by Joshua H. Burgess who married Jesse's daughter Mary Fox. In 1932 the property was owned by a Mr. Hallman. - (Letters of General Paul Quattlebaum, Colonel Claude E. Sawyer, Colonel Isaiah G. W. Steedman, the Reverend John Marcellus Steadman, and Mrs. Mamie N. Tillman; Edwin G. Scott - Recollections of a Long Life, pp. 109 and 110; Lexington County, S.C, Deed Book S, p. 151.) Part of this land was likely that of his Father. He and his wife had 13 children.
