Christopher John Snyder, born January 22, 1962, in Elmhurst, Illinois, passed away January 14, 2017, at his home in Nacogdoches surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Elmhurst, Illinois, Chris was the seventh of eight children born to Jerome Vincent Snyder and Patricia Ann Campbell Snyder. Chris graduated from York High School in 1980. While working in the Illinois prison system with at-risk students teaching a trades class, Chris made the decision to go back to school. He arrived in Nacogdoches in August 1997 and enrolled at Stephen F. Austin State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, then graduating in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation, which enabled him to work with visually impaired students and teach them how to travel safely in different environments. In 2005, he earned his Master of Education with a Major in Special Education, emphasis in Serious Emotional Disorders and Autism. Chris attained certification as a Texas Classroom Special Education teacher and as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist. Chris was then employed in 2005 as Assistive Technology Specialist for the Nacogdoches Independent School District. Since 2000, Chris has also served as an instructor for a 6-week summer course at Stephen F. Austin State University, teaching other teachers orientation and mobility skills so they could better assist their visually impaired students. Chris was very passionate about his work and made a positive difference in many students’ lives.

Chris married Kim Luna on July 21, 2001, and they are members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Moral. Chris was an avid golfer, a lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls, and since moving to Texas, a Dallas Cowboy fan.

Chris is survived by Kim and his loving siblings: brothers William and wife Sherrie, of Carlock, Illinois; Matthew of Zion, Illinois; and Peter of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; sisters Julie Masterton, and husband Robert of Elmhurst, Illinois; Margaret Sibert, and husband Ronald of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Laura Seils and husband Andrew of Mattoon, Illinois. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends, as well as the Luna family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Elizabeth.

Chris was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer on August 25, 2016. He greatly appreciated his siblings and Cousin William Campbell for coming to Nacogdoches from across the United States to visit and serve as caregivers, showing their great love and support of him.
