William Irving Brown was born September 6, 1895, at Whitestone, Long Island, Queens, New York, the son of William Thomas Brown of New York City and Annie Thompson of Saintfield, County Down, Northern Ireland.

Annie Marguerite Brown (1891-1966)
Mary (May) Alice Brown Passage/Ranson (1893-1972)
Infant Boy, stillborn (December 2, 1901)

Bill was raised in New York City, in Queens and Bronx boroughs. In 1913, Bill's mother Annie moved with him and his two sisters Annie and May from New York City to Chicago. Bill's father William, a carpenter, remained in New York.

Bill was an accomplished amateur photographer. In 1915, he witnessed and took photos of the steamer USS Eastland that capsized in the Chicago River on July 24.

Working as a "switch board man" for the Chicago Telephone Company in 1917, Bill registered for the draft, and subsequently entered the US Army, Signal Corps in October 1918 in Chicago, Illinois during World War I. Due to the armistice, Bill only saw a few months service and was discharged from Camp Grant, Illinois in January 1919.

Bill married Alice Ruth Walker on July 29, 1922, in the chapel at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of Obadiah Walker and Anna Lottie Martin, both emigrants from Prince Edward County, Ontario Province, Canada.

Geraldine Mae Brown Plough (1927-2013)
George William Brown (1930-2004)
Marjorie Ann Brown (1937-2002)

Bill worked for Illinois Bell Telephone in Evanston, Illinois. He remained employed through the Great Depression and World War II. After raising their family, Bill and Alice purchased a mobile home and moved several times, eventually residing in Northfield, Illinois. Bill was a kind, gentle person and grandfather to 10 children.
