Moville, Iowa - Charles Marvin Ashley, 73, of Moville died Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at his home.

Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville.

Charles was born on May 21, 1940, on the family farm in the Anthon, Iowa, area. He attended a country school and graduated from Anthon High School in 1958. While in high school, he was elected the Homecoming King and also played baseball and basketball. After high school, he worked at the Gothier Mink Farm before going into the service in 1963.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965. He played the trombone with the 61st Army Band. He also played for the U.S. Army Basketball Team.

He married Diane Hons on Aug. 17, 1968, in Elk Point, S.D. He farmed in the Woodbine, Iowa, area for more than 40 years. After he retired from farming, he moved to Moville five years ago.

He loved sports, NASCAR, basketball and especially the Sioux City Explorers baseball. He enjoyed the outdoors and truly loved farming.

He is survived by his wife, Diane of Moville; four children, Eric Wood and his daughter, Hannah of Clarksville, Iowa, Allyson and Kevin Bennett and their son, Gage of Moville, Brooke and Dean Mills of Mondamin, Iowa, and grandson, Devan Ashley of Woodbine, and Scott Ashley and his special friend, Tanner Hadsall of Des Moines; three sisters, Jean Petersen, Joyce Gothier and Sheryl Ashley; and two brothers, Bill and Art Ashley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Michelle Wood; a sister, Beverly Hueser; and a brother, Ed Ashley.
