Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. He received a gold medal in the Men's Weightlifting competition during the 1948 Summer Games in London. Born Frank Isaac Spellman, into a Jewish family, he was abandoned by his family at the age of seven and was raised in an orphanage. After developing an interest in weightlifting, he strengthened his skills at a gym in Southwest, Philadelphia. He made a name for himself, with a third-place finish in the World Championships in 1947 and one year later (1947), he improved to second-place. Spellman captured a gold medal for Team USA, with his first-place victory in the Men's Middleweight Competition at the 1948 Summer Games in London. Spellman maintained his professional wrestling career until 1971 and went on to become a professional photographer. He was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
