Leona Mae (Roorda) DePenning, widow of the late Gerald John DePenning, died Friday, January 6, 2017, at The Cottages, Pella, Iowa at the advanced age of 97 years, eight months and two days.
Born May 3, 1919, at Pella, Iowa, Leona was the only child of Abraham A. and Dena (Van Houweling) Roorda. Leona received her education in Pella and graduated from Pella High School in 1937. On February 12, 1941, Leona married Gerald John DePenning at the home of Gerald’s grandparents ,Walter and Gerdena (Vander Wilt) DePenning. They made their home on Leona’s parents’ farm, which had been in the Roorda family since 1922. Gerald and Leona were the proud parents of three sons and spent many vacations traveling America with “their boys”. They also enjoyed traveling with their friends across the United States and Europe. Leona was active with the Farm Bureau Women’s Club and the First Reformed Church of Pella. Gerald and Leona moved to Fair Haven in June 2001 and lived there until Gerald’s passing in July, 2002, after being happily married for 61 years. Leona continued to enjoy the company of her many friends at Fair Haven until she moved to The Cottages. There she enjoyed many puzzles and scrabble games.
Leona will be lovingly remembered by her three sons and their wives, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They are:
