Donald C. Ebbert
1921 - 2017

Donald Calvert Ebbert died January 8, 2017 in Woodburn, Oregon, of age related causes. He was 95 years young. Ebbert was born in Doland, South Dakota on June 13, 1921 to Walter and Philomela Calvert Ebbert. Upon his mother's death, his father and siblings moved to Walterville, Oregon in 1934. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1939 and was a resident of Springfield then Eugene, Oregon his entire life. In 2016 he moved to Woodburn to be close to his daughters in his last year of life.

Don was a WWII veteran, serving as a Tech Sargent 5 in the Army Air Corps. One of his last assignments was master gunner on a B29 Superfortress bomber stationed in Saipan. In his position as the top gunner on the plane, he had the astonishing view of the first mushroom cloud over Hiroshima, and he alerted his crewmates that it was 'no bomb that we had dropped.' For his service he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Ebbert married Cathryn Ellen Zehner on September 14, 1941. They had four children. In the 1950s he co-owned a grocery store, the 5th and Q Market in Springfield. He later sold his interest in the store and went to work for E.M. Adams Investment firm (later Adams Hess and Moore) in Eugene where he remained until retiring at age 75.

Don was the consummate community volunteer who was a charter member of the Springfield Lions Club working into his 90's to support their cause of helping the blind and deaf. He spent 10 years on the Springfield School Board and was a founding member of Northwood Christian Church, then later a member of the First Baptist Church of Springfield. His final volunteer work, almost to his last day, was for the 'Bags of Love' project where he cut literally thousands of fabric squares to be sewn into quilts and given away to children in crisis.

Beyond volunteering, Don's interests included woodworking, golfing, gardening and the Oregon Ducks, in that order. He spent countless hours creating beautiful furniture and wooden gadgets, most of which he gave away, enjoying a weekly round or more of golf and socializing afterwards, and puttering in his garden. He also designed and built his own dream home and remodeled the garage of nearly every house he owned into a 'rumpus' room.

Don's answer to life's conundrums was 'It's just one of those things,' a motto that buoyed all of us many times and kept him the positive, loving man he was.

His wife, Cathryn and son, Richard of Albany, OR, preceded him in death. In 2002 Ebbert married Lula (Hall) Clark. Survivors include his wife, Lula of Tucson, AZ; daughters: Carla Propst (Ken) and Rebecca 'Becky' Towles (Carl) both of Woodburn, OR; and Martha 'Marti' Kurth (Rich) of Whitefish, MT; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren and his sisters: Ardeth Jones of Corvallis, and Patty Mathews (Del) and Marion Baker, both of Springfield; along with numerous stepgrandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Don at 1 pm on March 25, 2017 at Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield. Donations in his honor may be directed to the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation.
