Charles Ronald "Ron" Burk, 80, of Salinas, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Kindred Pacific Coast Care Center.

Ron was born to parents, Charles Herbert and Alice Ida Burk, on September 13, 1933 in East St. Louis, Illinois. He graduated from San Mateo High School in 1951 and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1955.

Ron married Helen Lucille Mallory, on March 11, 1955 in San Luis Obispo.

He served in the U.S. Army for two years, stationed in Bamberg, Germany, with military training prior at Ft. Ord on the Monterey Peninsula.

Ron began working for Sears and Roebuck in San Luis Obispo in 1958 and in 1968 moved his family and transferred to the Sears store in Salinas where he managed the automotive department. He was employed with Sears and Roebuck for 35 years before his retirement in 1993.

Over the years, Ron loved restoring classic cars, doing much of the work himself. His pride and joy was his yellow 1947 Mercury convertible, named "Geraldine".

During his retirement, Ron could be found sporting one of his cheerful Hawaiian shirts exploring weekend garage sales and flea markets. He loved "searching for treasures" and equally delighted in "the thrill of the hunt" on behalf of family and friends. There was always something to look for and even more exciting to find!

He treasured his extensive collections of baseball cards, hot wheel cars, old car memorabilia, vintage movies, postage stamps and interesting books. Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Alice, and sister, Charlene Holtman.

Ron leaves loving memories to be cherished by his wife of 59 years, Helen, as well as daughter, Debbie (Jeff) Meeks, son, Larry (Jenell) Burk and four deeply cherished grandchildren, Mallory Meeks, Samantha Burk, Cole Burk and Justin Burk. He is also survived by brother, Ray (Jennefer) Burk of Fortville, Indiana, sister, Karen (Stephen) Haas of Evansville, Indiana and one niece, Lynette (Bill) Nappi of Belmont, California.

Ron's life will be celebrated Wednesday, April 2, 2014, 11:30am-1:30pm, at Corral de Tierra Country Club, 81 Corral de Tierra Road in Corral de Tierra.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Struve and Laporte Funeral Home.
