James was a cavalry scout and a retired veteran of the United States Army. He was a longtime Colorado Springs resident.
He is survived by three daughters, Elisabeth Williams, Erika Weber, and Jamie Fredrina; a sister, Lou Collins; his eight grandchildren; and his sixteen great-grandchildren.
