Martinus Willemsen was born on December 23, 1791 in Zutphen, Gelderland, Netherlands. He was the son of Willem Willemsen and Hendrika vanderHager. On June 29, 1814 he married Adriana Roelofsen (1792-1858), and together were the parents of the 8 children listed below. At the time of his marriage his occupation is listed as a "tailor". However, Martinus Willemsen at the time of his death was a military-service-man or soldier serving in the Dutch East Indies. He was likely fulfilling his required obligation for military service. He died on May 27, 1829, aboard the (Ship) Komeet. He had departed for the Dutch East Indies one year earlier on May 14, 1828, aboard the Ship Wilhelmina. He was 37 years of age at the time of his death.

Dutch East India was a colony of The Netherlands. Today it is called Indonesia. His cause of death is not known, however a note of Dutch history. Taking place in the Dutch East Indies, from 1825 to 1830 was what was called the Java War for control of the islands. The war cost the lives of 15,000 Dutch soldiers and many Javanese. I believe that Martinus was "called to serve" (today we would call it being drafted) and sent there to participate in this war. At that time in the Netherlands all male citizens were obligated to serve for five years. While most did this when they were younger, for some reason Martinus did not.

--It should be noted that after family members immigrated to the USA, the name was often spelled "Williamsen". As time went on, still other members shortened it to "Williams".
