Joe’s service began early when, after graduating from Grapevine High School, he enlisted in the US Army. First he served as a paratrooper in WWII, then as a radio specialist during the Korean War. His final duty station was the Pine Bluff Arsenal, where he served as a military policeman.
After the Army, Joe graduated from the Draughon School of Business in Little Rock and started Joe’s Radio and TV Sales and Service in Sheridan, a business that he owned for almost twenty years. He went to work for the US Postal Service as a rural carrier and was soon promoted to Postmaster at the Grapevine Office, retiring after seventeen years of service. Joe was a retired volunteer fireman for the City of Sheridan and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Joe will be remembered for his dedication to First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School Superintendent and spent many years operating the sound and CCTV system. Perhaps his greatest impact was as Sunday School teacher to generations of fifth and sixth grade boys—a role Mr. Waddle cherished for over fifty years.
On June 16, 1949, Joe married Sally Loreze Bratton. Joe loved Loreze every day of their 57 years of marriage until she preceded him in death. Together they raised two sons, who will forever treasure the memories of Joe’s teaching them to hunt and fish, and coaching them in Little League baseball. Joe co-founded the Waddle Home Deer Club in Grapevine. In addition to hunting and fishing, he enjoyed woodworking and boasted an impressive garden from which he gave away as much food as he kept. Joe also loved to play the fiddle and could famously play by ear to the delight of his audience.
Joe is survived by his two sons: Joe Lynn (Dianna) and Russell (Amy) Waddle, both of Sheridan, four loving grandchildren: Jessica (Jonathan) Weldon, Leah (Chase) Snyder, Bryan (Sydney) Waddle, Courtney (Joshua) Scott; two great-children: Jolee and Emma Snyder, and a cherished niece, Bonita Harbor of Sheridan and nephew, Wayne Shultz of Hot Springs. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Herman Shultz of Grapevine and nephew Elmer Shultz of White Hall.
Pallbearers: Carroll Latham, Loren Baggett, Carl Clinton, Chris Graves, Eddie Easley, and Franklin Pumphrey. Honorary Pallbearers: Herschel “Sonny” Kelly, Ham Waddle, Gary Don Easley, John Watson, Raymond Davis, T.D. Vanlandingham, and all members of Waddle Home Deer Club.
