Franklin News-Herald, Friday, Nov 14 1902:
Mrs. William L. Gilfillan and other relatives in this city have received the sad intelligence of the death of Mrs. Charles Smiley, which occurred in Clarksburg, WV, Thursday morning after a brief illness. She had been troubled a few days with grip, but had had apparently recovered, as just a short time before she dropped a card to Mrs. Gilfillan, stating that she was able to be up and around the house. As a consequence of this cheering news, the friends and relatives were greatly shocked when the news of her sudden demise was received.
She was born Miss Mintie Kilgore, and had been a resident of Franklin before and after her marriage. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Kilgore, well known residents of Franklin, but who are now living in Bowling Green, OH.
In 1885 she married Charles S. Smiley, who was a resident of Franklin and a brother of Miss Lura Smiley, a teacher in the Union school building. J. C. Kilgore of Franklin is a brother of the deceased.
Mintie Kilgore Smiley was born in Buffalo, NY, August 27, 1864, and was, consequently, a little over 38 years of age. She joined the Presbyterian church of Franklin when Rev. Dr. J M. Eaton was the pastor, but after her marriage, she was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church of Bradford, where she lived for some time. She was a good woman, possessing all of the characteristics that go to make up the true lady. She was a faithful wife and a loving mother, and in her death a large circle of friends will sympathize and mourn with the bereaved ones, especially the stricken husband and daughter.
The telegram received stated that the body would be sent to Franklin for interment. It will leave Clarksburg in the morning and arrive her Saturday night. The funeral will be Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
