Ellis was born the eldest of three children to the late Bertha Lee and Ellis Boyd on September 30, 1944 in Harleyville. He was educated in the Dorchester County School System and graduated from Kennedy High School. Ellis also served as a dedicated School Board Member for the former Dorchester County School District 3. Ellis loved being raised on a farm and took pride in using those skills later in life. He also loved welding and was proud to have a patent on a folding trailer he invented. Ellis was a jack of all trades and held several positions during his 30 plus years at Giant Cement before retiring. It's no secret that Ellis was handy and if he didn't know how to fix something, he'd figure it out. After retirement, Ellis could be found using his gifted hands to be a blessing to many. No job was too small or too big for Ellis James. It could be something as small as changing a door lock to projects as large as adding a room on to a home. No matter the task at hand he always worked with a giving heart, a smile on his face, and a story or two to share.
On March 29, 2008, Ellis was joined in Holy Matrimony with Linda Williams. The couple loved spending time together and enjoyed just being in each other's company. Whether taking road trips, cruising around the world or working on projects, if they were together, they were happy. Soon after marriage, they found their new church home, New Life Christian Fellowship Church where they attended services regularly.
To know Ellis was to love him. He never met a stranger and he will be missed by many.
Ellis was predeceased by his father and mother, Ellis and Bertha Boyd; two siblings, Curtis and Betty Boyd; and one son, Steven Ellis Boyd.
He leaves to cherish precious memories his loving wife, Linda Boyd; one daughter, Sharon (Dale) Williams; two step-daughters, Tamika (Marvin) Bennett and Tyesha (John) Edwards; six grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Annie Lou Boyd; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
All arrangements were entrusted to the professional staff of the Ling Funeral Home of St. George. and Leroy (Cindy) Riley, Walterboro; and several nieces and nephews.
