John was the son of Peter and Anna. Husband of Elizabeth Betsy Stetler. There children include Sarah, Peter, Susan, Absalom, Jacob, Elizabeth, Henry, Catharine, Andrew, Rachel, and Nancy. John and his wife Betsy lived near Saint Marry's river in Willshire Ohio and are buried near there. John Bolenbaugh and Elizabeth Stetler were some of the first settlers in Miamisburg Ohio and soon became part of the settlement in what is now Van Wert. This community was small in size with only 49 white settlers. The land was all forest and these families worked to clear land during a time when the American Indians were being driven out of the area. In 1854 the cholera epidemic hit Willshire and John and several other family members lost there lives.
The first election in Van Wert County was held in 1833 which was eight years after the Bolenbaugh's arrived. In that election ten votes were cast. Records show that John and 2 of his brothers Peter, and Jacob cast three of those ten votes.
