She endured years of Alzheimer's with grace and dignity. There were many dates and details she could not recall in the fog of the disease, but she never forgot who her children were. In many ways, that sums up the person she was.
She dedicated her life to God, her husband and her children. Her love knew no boundary nor judgment, a creed extended to family and friends. Her life was lived as a faithful Christian, touching all around her, showing us that life was about love, forgiveness, kindness and optimism and teaching us by example to always keep smiling. We will miss that smile - the light she shone so brightly. If there is a positive outcome of her passing - it is, without doubt - that she will be embraced by our dad, James, an embrace she has anticipated for 20 years. We know she is smiling now.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Bess; son, James A. Bess; and grandchildren, Mary Bess-Bower, Amanda Bess, Derrick Parsons and Jackie Bower.
She is survived by her children, Kenny Bess of Ripley, W.Va., Keith (Brenda) Bess of Ripley, Peggy Bess of Cheylan, Penny (Troy) Berry of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Paula (James) Bradshaw of Gallagher, W.Va. In addition to her children, she is survived by eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A special note of eternal gratefulness to her daughters, Peggy Bess and Paula Bradshaw, who saw to the daily love and care of our mom, and to Hubbard Hospice House for the care she received the final week of her life.
Funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, January 10, at Stevens and Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with Rev. Larry D. Campbell, her nephew, officiating. Burial will follow at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow. A visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
