George Kay, who was born November 23, 1929, passed away at Michealsen Health Center in Batavia, Ill. on January 18, 2014. Janet, his wife of 64 years, was at his side.

George lived a good and long life. He loved his family, his work and his clients.

Born and raised in Michigan City, Ind., he moved to Dundee, Ill. in 1957 to work at D. Hill Nursery. In 1981, he started George Kay & Associates in Geneva, Ill.

George received two American Association of Nurserymen Awards for landscape design and construction, at the White House, one presented to him by Lady Bird Johnson and the other by Pat Nixon.

He published two books: "Bonsai and the Japanese Garden," with co-author Kaneji Domoto, and "Yard and Garden Makeovers," with co-author Brian Kay.

He loved plants, was an ardent golfer, enjoyed music and later in life delighted in jigsaw puzzles.

George is survived by his wife, Janet; a brother, Ronnie, and sister-in-law, Phyllis, Long Beach, Calif.; daughter, Toni Jeannin,e and son-in-law, Michael (Rugen); grandsons, Travis and Jesse (Kay-Rugen), San Francisco; and son, Brian, and daughter-in-law, Lily; grandsons, Joe and Will, Geneva, Ill.

A memorial will be held in the spring.
