He worked for Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co. in Chattanooga, TN for 35 years, the last seven as chairman and chief executive officer. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, North Palm Beach. He earned his undergraduate degree from Arcadia University in Nova Scotia and mathematics teaching fellowships at the University of Toronto and Brown University. He was a Fellow with the Society of Actuaries. He also served as the chairman of the Health Insurance Association of America and the Presbyterian Church U.S. Board of Annuities and Relief. He held leadership roles with Chattanooga's United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Presbyterian Church congregations.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary F. Unruh; a daughter, Sandra J. Unruh of Atlanta; a son, David J. Unruh and wife Patricia of Chattanooga, TN; and two granddaughters.
A memorial service for the family is being planned.
