Morris Bennett (Ben) Young , 97, passed away January 11, 2007 at St. Mark's Nursing Home, Austin, MN. He was born on March 19, 1909 at Waverly, Washington, to Edward Henry and Blanch Bennett Young, and was raised in Bend, Oregon. He graduated from Union High School, and worked in farming, in a saw mill, and for the Irrigation District in Bend. In 1937 he went to Nome, Alaska. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, initially with Engineers in the Aleutian Islands, and then with the Alaska Scouts (G-2, Combat Intelligence) in the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas, which included land surveying the north slope of Alaska. After his discharge, he returned to Nome in 1945, and started Arctic Oil Delivery, a house-to-house fuel oil delivery business. It was there he met and married Dorothy Bender in 1946. They had three children, Richard Bennett, Donald Edward, and Dorothy Ruth. Ben was active in many organizations during his business years, including being a founding member of the Nome Rotary Club, was a member of the Alaska Road Commission, Selective Service, School Board, City Council, and many other organizations. Upon retiring in 1967, he moved to Sequim, Washington, and then Colorado Springs, CO beginning in 1971. He moved to Austin, MN in 2001, where he resided, first at The Cedars, and then St. Mark's Nursing Home. Survivors include sons Rick (Carol) of Austin, MN and Don of Bellingham, WA, son-in-law Rich Mattson of Juneau, AK, sister-in-law Alta Ruth Young of Oakhurst, CA, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter, sister Dorothy and brother Edward. Cremains will be scattered in the Rose Garden at Evergreen Shrine of Rest in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
