Daniel McKinney Elliott, of Austin, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 31, 2016 with family at his bedside.
Daniel was born February 15, 1961 in Harlingen, Texas to Barbara Gibbon and George W. Elliott, III. He grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, and lived in Austin, Fort Worth, Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Houston, graduating from Memorial High School in 1979.
After high school, Daniel worked various jobs in Houston. He moved to Irvine, California, in 1996 where he worked as an outstanding waiter for Chevy’s, followed by many years with Chevron Corporation in San Diego. Daniel was an active member of the Metropolitan Community Church of San Diego. He especially found joy singing in the choir.
As his health declined, he moved to Austin with his sister, Lee. Daniel continued to enjoy movies, food, family, and friends. He looked forward to daily walks through the neighborhood with his dog, Max, and was always quick with a smile and had kind words for his neighbors.
Together with his sister and friends, Daniel was honored to take part in the Austin AIDS Walk numerous times in memory of his brother, John, even finding the strength to participate one final time just a few weeks before he passed.
Daniel was preceded in death by his father, George, and his brother, John, both of Houston. He is survived by his mother, Barbara Hogan, and her husband, Bruce, of Hot Springs, Arkansas; his father's wife, Ann Marie, of Houston; his brother George, of Irving; his sister, Lee, of Austin; and his brother, Joe, and wife, Mona, of Cedar Park; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins across the country and abroad.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Resolutions Hospice for their incredible gift of compassion during Daniel’s last year of life. He really appreciated the care, support, and friendship they provided which greatly added to his quality of life.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Daniel Elliott may be made to AIDS Services of Austin, 7215 Cameron Road, Austin, Texas 78752, or a charity of your choice.
Daniel left an indelible mark upon us all and will be kept alive in our hearts forever.
