NEWPORT NEWS - Billy Dale Haynes 82, slipped into eternal rest with the Lord Jesus Christ on January 5, 2017. Billy D. was born in Wilson, NC on June 3, 1934, to the late Charles E. and Geneva Haynes. In addition to parents, he is proceeded in death by his first wife Margaret Louise Haynes, brothers; Jimmy Haynes, James Patrick Haynes, Tom Haynes, Charles E. Haynes Jr. and sister Dolly Saul. Even as a young boy, Billy D. was a hard worker and took on responsibility. He was also known to have a propensity for hard headedness and the occasional shenanigan; traits affectionately passed down to his daughters and grandchildren.

Billy D. joined the U.S. Army in 1955 and served for two years. Afterwards, in 1957 he entered the workforce at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Company where he worked and retired after 37 years in the X42 Department. In 1962 he married Margaret L. Hicks and they lovingly raised two daughters in Newport News, Va. There, they took delight in fishing, going to the Outer Banks, Shenandoah Mountains and monthly trips to North Carolina. Billy D. had many interest. He thoroughly enjoyed fishing with the Tidewater Bass Club and his pals, Howard, Danny, and Jake. Hunting season found him happy in Marion County with Howard and Sam. Another joy was attending NASCAR races. He could always be counted on to help family, friends, and neighbors in need, no matter what time of day. He had the biggest heart, a strong sense of duty and a great sense of humor.

In 2004, Billy married Shirley Tomlinson and they enjoyed spending time in Myrtle Beach, fishing, going to shows and playing cards. If his health was good, he never missed a Rock Ridge High School Reunion.

Although the people saddened by his passing are many, he is survived by his wife of twelve years, Shirley Haynes, daughters; Tammy Haynes, Terry Bimler (John) and grandsons; John Alan, Zack, Nick, and grand dog Winston in Virginia. A sister, Sally Boswell of Wilson, NC and a multitude of nieces and nephews. We are thankful and grateful to have had Billy D. in our lives and we will miss the sparkle in his eyes.

If the Lord willin' and the creek don't rise, we will celebrate his life with a visitation (11:30AM) and service(1PM) on Friday, January 13, 2017, at the Peninsula Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. The family would like to thank the Doctors and staff at WilMed in Wilson, NC for their professionalism, and caring attentive natures. Especially Dr. Cherukuri, Dr. Sykes, and the Palliative Care staff. May they all be blessed.
