Frank is the son of Ira and Opal (Henderson) Patterson. He was raised in Webb City, Missouri until enlistment in the United States Navy in 1953.
He served aboard the U.S.S. America, U.S.S. Independence and various duty stations worldwide through his 20 years of naval service.
He saw combat in Vietnam 1969-70 while serving as a hospital corpsman with the 1st Marine Division.
Frank met his wife, Tsuroko while stationed on the island of Okinawa and was married in Tokyo Japan in 1963.
He retired from the Navy in 1973. He then went on to work in the law enforcement and nuclear maintenance fields.
He made his home in Blair, Nebraska since 1985
Frank was a member of the Blair VFW Post 1251, Blair American Legion Post and Fleet Reserve Association, branch 276 in Omaha, NE.
