Jennie Marie Bertini McMonagle, 94, of California, Pa., passed away with her family by her side on April 5, 2006, at Suburban General Hospital in Bellevue, Pa., a daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Landini Bertini.

She was born May 15, 1911, in Pistola, Italy, and later raised in the Granville and Donora areas.

Mrs. McMonagle was a 1929 graduate of Donora High School and also earned her comprehensive teaching certificate at California Normal School. She went on to be part of California State College's first Master's Program earning her reading specialist degree.

Mrs. McMonagle began her teaching career in the Donora School District where she taught in the elementary and secondary levels.

As a devoted mother, she took a leave of absence from teaching during the birth of her two sons, Richard Jr. and Keith. Following the death of her husband, Richard Sr., she resumed her teaching career in the California School District.

She taught in the elementary schools and later as a reading specialist in the high school.

Mrs. McMonagle was an ardent supporter of education for all, a value that was inherited from her father. Raised in a time when most Italian women were prepared to be housewives, she was encouraged to strive academically.

Throughout her entire teaching career, Mrs. McMonagle always brought out the best in her students and had a strong impact on their lives.

She was a member of the California Friday Evening Women's Club and an original member of the California State College Alumni Association. In her retirement, Jennie was constantly active, spending numerous hours volunteering and attending activities at the California Senior Citizens "Center In The Woods".

She very much enjoyed running errands, helping her neighbors, friends, and family throughout her life, her friendly, gentle, and kind personality was contagious, Jennie was known for her extreme generosity and the "care packages" she would give to her family and friends. She always loved conversing and meeting new people. Jennie enjoyed being surrounded by her family at get-togethers, always happy being around those she loved dearly. Jennie always handled adversities well with her strong-willed spirit. Even as her health declined over the past few years, she still managed to be loving, pleasant, and appreciative to those who helped her.

Jennie is survived by her two loving sons, Richard D. McMonagle, Jr. and wife, Athena of Avalon; granddaughter, Merissa Jeanine; great-granddaughter Mira; grandson, Brendan Price, and Keith D.
