Celebrating The Life of Grace
(Funeral Program)
Mrs. Block was born Grace Evelyn Johnson on October 13, 1916 in Gering, Nebraska to Eben and Dora Johnson. She was baptized November 16, 1919 at the home of Mabel and John Olson, Bavaria, KS by Rev. J.E. Liljedahl of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was confirmed on October 8, 1939. She grew up with 8 brothers and sisters in a farm house on property that was later condemned to become part of Camp Phillips near Falun, KS and graduated from Falun High School. Grace married Bennie Lloyd Block July 20, 1940 at the Parsonage of Immanual Lutheran Church officiated by Rev. J.E. Liljedahl. She was postmaster at Bavaria, KS for almost 30 years, retiring in 1982. After retiring, some things Grace enjoyed doing were to eat out, go antiquing, play pitch, and especially traveling to see family. Grace and Bennie were once active members of the Square D's Square Dancing Club and for many years also enjoyed traveling to ballroom dances in Wichita as well as Salina. After refurbishing a house on the property, they moved from Bavaria, KS to "The Farm" near Falun, Kansas in 1976, the grandchildren's favorite place to visit. In 1995, they moved to Webb City, MO and later to Overland Park, KS. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Bennie in March 2002. Survivors include a son, John and wife Sheryl of Olathe; a daughter Joan Morgenson and husband David of Lenexa; a brother Howard Johnson of Ottawa; five sisters, Minnie Beck of Council Grove, Bly Allen of Altoona, WI., Wanda Block of Lenexa, KS; Alva Smith and husband J.B. of Garland Texas and Ruth Oborg and husband Jim of Lindsborg, KS, Marilyn Johnson Holly of Cleburne, TX. and Margaret Johnson of San Andreas, CA; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild and many neices and nephews - all of whom were her favorites.
