Deseret News, Jan. 25, 1999. Obituary: ST. GEORGE, UT--John Frederick Eberhardt, 80, died at home in St. George, Utah, January 24, 1999. He was born August 2, 1918, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Alexander E. and Elizabeth Chester Hard Eberhardt. He married Margaret R. Smith February 6, 1946, and raised six children: John (Sandi), Julie (Joseph K. Davis), Robert, Kevin (Robin), Janice, Bryan (Debbie); 14 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.John graduated from East High School and attended the University of Utah. Through Scouting, John was skipper of a Sea Scout troop and earned the Silver Beaver Award. His experience as an Eagle Scout and skier led to an instructor position with the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division. He received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star from combat in Italy during World War II. John was a partner in the family business, Salt Lake Mattress Co. He served as president of Utah Manufacturing Association and Lt. Governor of Salt Lake Kiwanis, also serving as president of the Salt Lake YMCA. Upon his retirement in 1975, the family moved to Midway where John served as president of Midway Boosters and as Auxiliary Coast Guard Flotilla Capt. In his 80th year, John was baptized into the LDS Church and his and Margaret's marriage was solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple January 9, 1999. He loved serenading life with Margaret, family and friends.

Survived by wife, family, and brother James A. (Joyce) Eberhardt.

Preceded in death by parents and sisters, Katharine, Marian and Eleanor. Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Midway 1st Ward LDS Chapel, Midway, Utah. Visitations will be at Metcalf Mortuary, 300 West St. George Blvd., on Tuesday, Jan. 26, from 6 to 7 p.m. and Thursday 10 to 11 a.m. prior to services at the Midway Chapel. Interment will be in the Midway Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice Care, Primary Children's Hospital or to charities of choice.
