COLUMBIA - Services for Dewey Grant Bennett Jr. will be held Friday, October 21, at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends after the ceremony.

Mr. Bennett, golf professional, teacher, greens superintendent for over 60 years died Sunday, October 16, 2005. He was born in Winston Salem, NC, and was the son of the late Dewey G. Bennett Sr. and the late Kate Veach Bennett. He lived in Columbia, SC, from 1979 until his death and was a member of Spring Valley Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Bennett graduated from Clemmons, NC, high school in 1936 where he lettered in four sports. He graduated from Oak Ridge Military Institute in 1938 where he lettered in three sports. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Mr. Bennett joined the Marines and started flight training at Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston Salem, NC. He was the 6th Battalion Commander and Regimental commander at Chapel Hill Naval Pre-Flight School. He set many Navy records as a "guinea pig" naval cadet officer. He was a class 1B43 naval pilot 2nd Lieutenant U.S. Marine Corps in both Memphis, TN and Pensacola, FL. He was one of 50 pilots selected for special training to fly Mosquitoes at Sanford Florida Naval Air Station. At Cherry Point, North Carolina Marine Corps Base to VMD-354, he served as flight commander for four-engine photographic squadron and at El Centro California as an instrument flight instructor in R5C (C-46) to Ewa MCAS in Hawaii. He served in the Pacific with special work in the Philippines, Okinawa and China at the close of WWII. He switched to inactive status from the service in the fall of 1946 as Captain of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He was thanked for his service and separated in 1972.

He served the following golf courses in various capacities as golf professional, superintendent and built an outstanding reputation as a teacher for all types of players particularly junior players:

New Burn Golf & Country Club (1947-1951), Florence Country Club (1951-1964), Range End Country Club in Pennsylvania (1965-1966), Country Club of South Carolina (1966-1978), WildeWood Country Club (1979-1988), Crickentree Golf Club (1988-1992), and The Golf Center in Pontiac (1992-2003).

He was inducted into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame (1978), the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame (1980), Carolinas PGA Golf Hall of Fame (1985) and Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame (1988).

He served on the USGA Junior golf committee from 1961-1991 and was a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow (1984). He also served as President of both the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame (1992-1993) and South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame (1991-2002). Mr. Bennett was extremely proud of all people who dedicated time and energy to further the great game of golf.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Rozellen Dalton Bennett of The Lowman Home; sons David Grant Bennett, wife Lynn; Gary Dalton Bennett, wife Debbie; grandchildren: Betsy Vonn Bennett Ginn, husband Stewart; Lori Bennett Beaty, husband Will; Nicholas Banks Bennett, wife Kimberly Laws; Justin Grant Bennett; Kelly Elizabeth Bennett and Katherine Louisa Bennett; great-grandchildren: Alexia Suzanne Bennett and Adam Grant Bennett.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation, Spring Valley Presbyterian Church, the Lutheran Hospice Ministries, the nurses and staff at Lowman Home Nursing Center, Fairway Outreach or The South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame.
