Herbert Cole Brooks, 88, of Falmouth passed away Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Mary Washington Hospital.

Mr. Brooks was the son of the late St. Clair and Emma Brooks. He was born and raised in Falmouth and was always proud of his Falmouth roots. He attended Falmouth High School and joined the Navy when he turned 18 years old. He served from July 9, 1946-July 8, 1948 having served at New London Submarine Base. After being discharged from the Navy he worked with his father, who was a stone mason, for a short period of time. He later worked at the Power Plant in Quantico, Gwaltney’s Esso Service Station, and Carl D. Silver’s dealership reconditioning cars. He retired as a firefighter from Ft. Belvoir in 1982. He then went to work for the Virginia Department of Transportation and retired after five years.

Mr. Brooks was a member of Falmouth Baptist Church having joined when he was nine years old. He was a member of the Berean Bible Sunday school class; Falmouth Fire Department and a charter member of the White Oak Fire Department. He was a trustee of the Falmouth Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Doris Brooks; his children Herbert Wayne Brooks, Diana Christine Knight, Beverly Brooks Smith, Janet Lynn Brooks and Joann Brooks Taylor; two step-sons Richard D. Wells and Rodney L. Wells; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister Marion Robinson; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Ann Phillips.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10 at Falmouth Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Falmouth Cemetery. Firemen attending the service will serve as honorary pallbearers.
