"DEATH OF SCOTTISH SCIENTIST. We regret to intimate the death of Captain R. C. Davie, R.A.M.C., which occurred suddenly on Tuesday evening. Captain David, who was on leave from France, was attacked by influenza while on a visit to his wife and *infant daughter at Largs. Pneumonia supervened on Monday with fatal result. Born 32 years ago, he was educated at Glasgow High School and Glasgow University, where he graduated M.A. in 1907 with first class honours in English, and two years later graduated B.Sc. in botany, ??? and geology. He also gained the D???-Smith gold medal in botany and the Donaldson Scholarship in the same subject. After acting as assistant in the Botanical Department at Gilmorehill he received a similar appointment at Edinburgh University, and since April, 1913, he had been Lecturer on Botany under Professor Bayley Balfour. In 1914 Captain Davie made an expedition to Brazil, and his observations during his travels there were among the subjects on which he contributed to the literature of botany. When war broke out he offered his services, but these were not accepted until 1917. Since then he had found scope for his bacteriological knowledge as officer in charge of a sterilising section of a water tank company. Last year he was promoted from the rank of Lieutenant to that of Captain. In 1915 his Alma Mater conferred upon him the degree of D.Sc., in recognition of his distinguished services to science. Dr. Davie was a Fellow of and an office-bearer in the Botanical Society."
