Probably from Doon, a village in County Limerick located fairly close to the border of Co. Tipperary. When, in later life, John received a grant of land and built his house at Appin, New South Wales, he called it "Doon Farm".

Have removed alleged date of birth 10 June 1776. This seems to have been obtained from an Ancestry tree which cites that as a baptism date, not a birth date, at St Mary's church, Kilkenny ( www.ancestry.com.au/imageviewer/collections/61039/images/05028_02_0082 ). However, the baptism place, Kilkenny, is some 85 to 90 kilometres east of Doon, which raises the possibility that this may be a different Dwyer family who happened to also have a son called John. The NSW BDM Death Index doesn't appear to have a listing for John, so we can't use that to match parents' names against the baptismal record's Patt Dwyre and Elinor Comerford. The mother's name Elinor is suggestive, as John gave his daughter the same name. Until a confirming source is found, the baptism record should be treated with caution. Australian convict records point to a birth year of circa 1776.
