Curtis was the son of Cain West and Susie Brown West. He was educated in the Houston County School System. He joined the U.S. Army and received his Honorable Discharge. He worked in Civil Service on Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia for over 30 years until his retirement. He was the owner and operator of the M&W Bottle Shop in Perry, Georgia for many years. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Henderson, Georgia. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #83 in Cordele, Georgia.
He was married to Vivian Thornton West.

2 Granddaughters: Melissa West and Candice Nicole Howard(Cliff).
4 Great Grandchildren: Jai'Man Z. Haslem, De'Asia M. Williams, Jamarya Z. Jennings and Canighya N. Williams.
2 Devoted Nephews: Larry Lester and Jackie Lester.
2 Sisters-In-Law: Arnita T. Beavers(James) and Delores Thornton.
3 Brothers-In-Law: Willie Thornton Jr(Emma), Alford G. Thornton(Philomena) and Earl W. Thornton(Rosalyn).
