Pioneer Here, Dies
Death Occurred Suddenly Yesterday: Had Resided Here for 68 Years
Marquette lost one of it's pioneer residents yesterday with the death of Michael Tierney, 79 years old, who passed away at 3 o'clock in the afternoon at his home, 215 Blemhuber avenue. Death came suddenly a few minutes before Mr. Tierney had planned to start out on an automobile ride with members of his family.
Mr. Tierney was born in Lee, Massachusetts, on May 31, 1852, and came to Marquette when he was 11 years old, with his parents. With the exception of four or five years, which he spent in Negaunee and Ishpeming, Mr. Tierney resided in Marquette. When his parents established their home here, Marquette consisted of only a few cabins and Mr. Tierney was one of the few remaining pioneers who could recall the early-day development of the town. He had a wide acquaintance among the older residents of Marquette county. He had lived in the family home on Blemhuber avenue for 42 years.
Mr Tierney leaves two sons and five daughters, all residents of Marquette. The sons are John, a member of the city commission, and Daniel, proprietors of Tierney's grocery. The sisters are Mrs. William Williams and the Misses Nora, Theresa, Mary and Leona. he also leaves a sister, Mrs. Nora Murphy, of Marquette and four grandchildren, Ruth, John, Jeanette and Robert Williams of Marquette.
Funeral arrangements will be announced tomorrow.
