Susan Darden Butler, 62, of Canyon, Texas passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, surrounded by her family.

Susan was born on September 10, 1954, to Joe and Bill Darden in Ralls, Texas. She grew up in Lorenzo, Texas and attended Lubbock Christian University before attending Texas Tech University, where she received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Home Economics Education.

She married Stephen Lee Butler on January 14, 1978, who was the love of her life for almost 39 years. They moved to Canyon from Arlington, Texas in 1979 to start their family and later an architectural business. Together they raised their three daughters, whom she encouraged to reach their full potential. As a family they enjoyed traveling across America and abroad. She was a devoted teacher and friend, and those who knew her were blessed; those who didn’t really missed out.

She was an active member of the Central Church of Christ in Amarillo, where she served on mission trips to Inner-City Houston, the Itaquera Church of Christ in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and a medical mission in Antigua, Guatemala. She was a member of the Home Economics Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Susan enjoyed and loved horseback riding with her friends of the Panhandle Trail Riders Association, blessed by the outdoor back-country of God’s creation.

Her passion for education was shown by teaching Career and Technology at Amarillo and Caprock High Schools, where she helped spearhead the statewide IPET (Instructional Practices in Education and Training) program, training the next generation of high school students towards careers in pre-school education.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Bill Darden and her brother, Joe David Darden.

Susan is survived by her husband, Stephen Butler; her daughter Susan Lee Butler Schenk and her husband, Caylan of Shallowater, Texas; daughter, Lauren Butler Bailey and her husband, Joel, of Carrolton; and daughter Chace Butler, of Houston. She was known as Hunny to her grandchildren, Lily Belle Schenk, Zane Nicholas Schenk, Rhett Butler Bailey, and Tag Henry Bailey.

Susan was an advocate of Children’s Literacy Program, COTHHC, PO Box 30182, Amarillo, TX 79120-0182 and Christian Relief Fund, PO Box 19670, Amarillo, TX 79114. Memorials may be made to one of these.
