Benjamin Woodrow Shaeffer was born to Henry Arthur Shaeffer and Myrtle Elmina Long.

Starting in 1921 the family moved to Hillsboro, then Bend and Redmond.

By September of 1924 they settled in Joseph, Oregon.

December 12, 1924 Benjamin lost his father Henry Arthur Shaeffer. After the loss of his father, his mother moved the family to Portland.

At 16 Benjamin fell in love with a girl and ran away to be married in Mexico, but they were caught in Bend, Ore. and sent back home. His mother decided to send him to live with his aunt "Birdie" in Bremerton, Washington. Birdie took him to enlist in the Navy. They lied about his age.

Benjamin was a career Navy man learning the trade of electrician. He served on the USS West Virginia from 1930- 1941. He was also on the USS Nevada.

While in Long Beach, California he met Marie Elizabeth Perkins and they were married on Nov. 25, 1934 in Yuma, Arizona. They settled in Anaheim, CA.

Together they had the following children; Ben Arthur Shaeffer and John Richard Shaeffer.

He moved his family to San Bernardino, CA.

He lost his wife Marie in 1965.

After he got out of the Navy he went to work for Santa Fe Rail Road as an electrician.

After his retirement he loved to play golf, gamble in Vegas and play bridge with his sister Maysel Shaeffer-Hansen and her husband. He also spent a lot of time with his family in Oregon and California.

My memories of my grandpa are special. I remember his military hair cut and glasses. He smoked cigars and liked to have a cocktail. He was kind and generous. He spoiled me rotten.

Boys seem to run in the family, and I am his only granddaughter. He loved all his grandchildren, but I have always been told I was the apple of his eye. He was the greatest grandpa ever and I love and miss him dearly.

When he passed in 1981, he was survived by his 2 sons; Ben Shaeffer and John Shaeffer; sister Maysel Hansen; nephews, Stuart Springer and Ralph Hansen; grandchildren, Doug Shaeffer, Dale Shaeffer, Dan Shaeffer and Kymberly Shaeffer; and his 3 step grandsons.
