He was a member of the Knights of Columbus-Edward Douglass White Council 2473, Arlington Lions, Falls Church Chamber of Commerce, and a former President and Board Member of the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers. He was an avid Washington sports fan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Carol Fletcher Murphy; son and daughter-in-law Ryan and Shannan Murphy, daughter and son-in-law Megan and Brian Lantz; son Justin Murphy; grandchildren Jack, Ellie, and Charlie Murphy and Dillon Lantz; siblings Bob, Tim, Terry, Colleen, Christine, Beth, Katie and their spouses. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert J. Murphy and Elizabeth K. Murphy; brothers in law John Larkin and Pete Pappas.

Visitation will be held Friday January 6, 2017 from 5-8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Arlington, VA. Funeral service to be held on Saturday January 7, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna, Virginia. Graveside service to follow at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Charities Diocese of Arlington, 200 N.
