Ethel Holt Backus, age 90, a resident in the town of Newton, entered eternal life on Monday, January 2, 2017 at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers.

Ethel was born on March 19, 1926 in Port Washington. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Elvira Stieg Holt. Ethel was a graduate of Kiel High School with the class of 1943. She continued her education at Manitowoc County Normal graduating in 1947 and furthered her education at Silver Lake College graduating in 1973. Ethel taught four years at the Taylor School, a one room rural grade school in the town of Meeme, one year at Holy Cross Catholic Grade School in Mishicot, and six years at St. Mary's Catholic Grade School in Manitowoc. Ethel also taught interior decorating classes for twelve years at various area vocational schools. Ethel was also employed for the Navy Department in Chicago, IL, Department of Agriculture, Chicago, IL, Manitowoc County Superintendent of Schools in Manitowoc, Manitowoc County Register of Deeds, and also the Job Service in Manitowoc. On May 30, 1951 she married Paul A. Backus at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Alverno. He preceded her in death on September 23, 2001. Ethel was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. She was a faithful letter writer to family and friends.

She is survived by three children: Kathy (Joe) Neumeyer, Kiel; Kristy (Jim) Parkins, Eau Claire; Paul Holt Backus, Valders; daughter-in-law: Jill Backus, Cato; six grandchildren: Sarah, Travis (Amanda), Amber and Courtney Neumeyer, Valerie and Cole Parkins; sister: Carol Lahey, Green Bay; brother: Ralph Wedekind, Two Rivers; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Allen and Gen Backhaus, James Backus, Gertrude Backus; nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: Walter and Elvira Holt; husband: Paul; son: Larry; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 6, 2017 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 8100 Brunner Road, Newton. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Dave Beaudry. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc. Relatives and friends may call at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church on Friday, January 6, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m.
