She was born April 28, 1922 in Newark, NJ, the daughter of the late Daniel F. Lockwood and the late Flora L. Haudenschild Lockwood.
Flora married the love of her life, William F. Powers on November 2, 1947. Flora and Bill enjoyed more than 48 years of love and travel before Bill’s passing on July 23, 1996.
Before becoming a wife and mother, Flora was employed at the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics as a Mechanic Learner. On April 2, 1943, Flora was transferred to Rome Army Air Field where she attained the rating of Aircraft Mechanic in the Engine Installation and Assembly Brach, Aircraft Repair Section. Flora frequently spoke of her time at Rome Army Air Field where she oversaw her own all-male crew with great pride and accomplishment.
Flora is survived by daughter, Dawn F. Lyon of Sparrowbush, NY; granddaughter, Holly Lyon Reinhardt and her husband, Rich of Port Jervis, NY; great-granddaughter, Fiona Dawn Reinhardt of Port Jervis, NY; nephew, James Byrnes and his companion, Gerry Tiberi of Putnam Valley, NY; niece-in-law, Diane Byrnes Picciano; and several grandnieces and grandnephews. Also surviving are daughter, Darlene Symons and her husband, Tom; grandson, Christopher Symons; and granddaughter, Brittney Symons all of Austin, Texas.
Flora was predeceased by son-in-law, Richard J. Lyon, Jr. and nephew, Kenneth Byrnes.
The family would like to express its sincerest thanks to the staff of the Sullivan County Adult Care Center, where Flora spent her last days.
A graveside funeral service will be held at a later date at the Maplewood Cemetery, Hunter, NY.
