Roger Emery Manning, 79, of Lachine, died Friday, December 30, 2016 at Back Home AFC in Lachine.

Roger was born October 22, 1937 to the late Emery and Evelyn (Smith) Manning and raised in Lachine, Michigan, attended and graduated from Alpena High School and Alpena Community College. From there he continued his education at Northern Michigan University in Marquette MI. Upon his completion of his degree he proceeded to teach Math and English in Roscommon High School and Posen High School for several years. He then decided to change careers and he was hired by Michigan State University as Alpena County 4-H Youth Agent later becoming Region 7 Director where he worked for 27 years. He spent his life working with the youth of our community. He was instrumental in developing many 4-H programs. He was also a 4-H leader in woodworking, livestock and the horse and pony areas. He shared his vast knowledge, wisdom and kind and encouraging words with the youth and well as adults in the 4-H program.

As a boy, he and his family were heavily involved with horses. He would tell how his older sister, Fern, would come to his school in the winter and pull them home on a sled pulled by a horse. Roger became quite a rider showing his speed horse “Old Goldie”, he and his friend, Ervin Chabot, traveled many weekends all over Michigan to horse shows. Later he switched to riding and training pleasure and halter horses. Later in life, he trained many horses for other horse owners. Through the years his children and grand children joined him in the show ring. Roger was also a well known and respected horse show judge, and hosting many education clinics for youth and adults. He also enjoyed auctioneering and his partnership in Togs and Tack Western Store. Roger was also a very active member in the Alpena County Horsemen’s Club, North Eastern Michigan Association of Horse Clubs, Northern Michigan Beef Breeders Association, Northern Michigan Quarter Horse Breeders Association and he also served as Vice President of the church council at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hubbard Lake.

After marrying his wife Barb on September 24, 1988 and residing on Wolf Creek Road in Hubbard Lake, where they continued raising and showing horses and beef cattle. In retirement Roger and Barb enjoyed traveling to many interesting destinations. Roger will be missed by many.

Surviving is his wife, Barbara Hunt-Acton-Manning, eight children: Harold (Sherlyn) Manning- Alpena, Tammy (Mark) Aube- Ossineke, Kim (Bob) Aube- Ossineke, Robin Acton- Orion Township, Janice (Mike)Hemgesberg- New Lothrup, Vicki (Fred) Schmittka- Orion Township, Daniel (Carol) Acton - Lapeer, 15 grandchildren; Travis Manning (Angela)- Alpena, Crystal Seelye (Nate)- Alpena, Stacy Wojda (Josh Jr.)- Hubbard Lake, Kayla Sobek (Vince)- Posen, Janelle Van Sipe- Orion Township, Jessica Acton- Oscoda, Brittany Robinson- Oxford, DeShawn Robinson- Florida, Dominique Robinson- Oxford, Shane Swan - Mancelona, Mitchell Acton- Lapeer, Cole Acton (Katelyn)- Auburn Hills, Kyle Acton- Traverse City, Stacy Davis (Ken)- Clarkston and Becky Schmittka- White Lake and 18 great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Pearl (Jerry) Howe of Lachine and two brothers; Fred (Marge) Manning of Lachine and Arlie (Elaine) Manning of Wallace, MI. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Billie Ann Swan and a sister, Fern Christensen.

Roger Manning is at McWilliams Funeral Home – Alpena where friends may call on Monday from 2:00 to 8:00 PM and on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hubbard Lake, with Rev. Joseph Llewellyn officiating. Interment will be in the spring at Wolf Creek Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Compassus, the Alzheimer’s Association or Alpena County 4H.
