Governor of Alabama. He was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1954 where he served four years as Speaker of the House. Brewer, who was close to previous Alabama Governor George Wallace and then Governor Lurleen Wallace, was elected in 1966 to serve as Lieutenant Governor. After Governor Lurleen Wallace died in office, Brewer assumed the role as Alabama's 47th Governor. Brewer worked to enact racial reform in the state by making calls for more funding for education along with establishing a commission to examine changes to the Alabama State Constitution. Brewer lost to George Wallace in the 1970 Alabama gubernatorial election in closely fought runoff election.
