CHEBOYGAN - Anna (Stokes) May Thornton, age 83 of Cheboygan, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Larson Hall, where she had been a resident for the past six years. Anna was born on a farm near Black River in Cheboygan County on May 6, 1925, the daughter of George and Lola (Rands) Stokes. Anna was a lifelong resident of the Black River area. She was No. 6 in a family of 10. Her mother died when she was 14 and she took over the job of caring for her younger siblings, along with helping do all of the farm chores. In later years Anna worked at Royal Linen, retiring after many years of service. She enjoyed hunting and fishing, working crossword puzzles, sewing, flowers and spending time with her family. She is survived by a daughter, Judy Brody of Cheboygan; a granddaughter Tracey Holland; an two great-granddaughters; Sydney and Monica Holland; two brothers,; Melvin (Joyce) Stokes and Bill Stokes; two sisters, Elsie Atkinson of Gladwin, Mich., and Helen (Walt) Lancewicz; and three sisters-in-law, Isabell, Jenny and Alice. She was preceded in death by five brothers, James, Garland, Marvin, Frances and Mike Stokes. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the Nordman Funeral Home in Cheboygan. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 2008 at the funeral home. The Rev. Jeff Dinner will officiate. Interment will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery in Aloha Township. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Straits or the Larson Hall Activity Fund. Envelopes are available at the Funeral Home.
