He was born in Glassport, PA on January 5, 1936 to the late George Brough and the late Velora Garland Brough. He was a graduate of East McKeesport High School in the class of 1953. He served in the U.S. Army before graduating from Slippery Rock University where he earned his bachelor’s in elementary education. He went on to earn his master’s in physical education from the University of Pittsburgh and his doctorate in guidance from Nova University in Florida. Robert married his wife of over 52 years, Vonnie-Kaye Galvin Brough, on August 20, 1960. She survives him. He taught at Ellport, Wampum, and Perry Schools before serving as guidance counselor at Riverside Middle School for many years until retiring in 1997. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church in North Sewickley Township. His passion was flying and serving as a flight instructor, teaching many students how to fly. He acquired numerous aviation certifications and served as president of the Condor Aero Club at the Zelienople Municipal Airport. He flew commercially for Allegheny Airlines, which later became U.S. Airways. Dr. Brough was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, hiking, and swimming. He managed the pool at Riverside as well as the Veterans Memorial Pool in Ewing Park for many years. He also enjoyed musical theater and adored children and animals.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David Brough.
In addition to his wife, Vonnie-Kaye, he is survived by two sons and one daughter: Robert (and Lisa) Brough, Jr. of Ellwood City, Christopher (and Shelley) Brough of Gibsonia, and Aimee Brough of Newport, PA. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Robyn, Garrett, Emily, Elizabeth, David, and Shasta, and a great granddaughter, Cadence. Three sisters also survive, Ruth Ann (and David) Brinley of Irwin, Cheryl (and Tom) Gretok of Greensburg, and Beverly (and Bill) Ray of McKeesport, as well as a sister-in-law, Arlene Brough, of Irwin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 3 P.M. until the time of a Celebration of Life service at 7 P.M. on Monday, October 29, 2012 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue, with Rev. Brad Neel officiating, assisted by Rev. Tom Kennedy.
Private interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Perry Township.
