Monique Bonnier Pitts, 90, of Charlottesville, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2016, at a local nursing facility. She was born in Paris, France, on August 17, 1926, to the late Claude and Therese Bonnier.

Mrs. Pitts was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Richard Pitts whom she married on May 13, 1947.

She was primarily educated in France in her early years and received a PhD from the University of Michigan in French Medieval Literature. She was retired from teaching as a professor from Oakland University. She enjoyed reading, studying, writing, and presenting papers on French Medieval Literature both in the United States and abroad. Mrs. Pitts helped her husband with the publication of his book, "Return to Base" which he completed shortly before his death in 2003.

She is survived by her daughter, Florence Pitts of Charlottesville; three sons, Albert Pitts, "Alan" Howard A. Pitts and his wife, Bathsheva, and Christopher Pitts and his wife, Terri; six grandchildren, Lea and Dina Pitts, Pauline and Daniel, Leorah and Elyashiv.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at Monticello Memory Gardens, Charlottesville. The family will receive friends from 3to 5 p.m. on Monday, January 2, 2017, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home. Condolencesmay be sent to the family at www.hillandwood.com.
