During World War II, Leon Campbell was a member of the 17th Ordnance Company. His unit serviced the tanks of the Provisional Tank Group during the Battle of Bataan.
On April 9, 1942, he became a Prisoner of War and was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan in the Philippines. He was taken by ship to Korea and sent Mukden, Manchuria, where he was liberated from at the end of the war.
