The Rev. Edwin Charles Carter, Jr., of Fountain City, went to be with the Lord with his family at his side on December 29, 2016 at the age of 86. A graduate of Carter High School, he attended the University of Tennessee, and graduated from Emory & Henry College, and Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He became a United Methodist Minister, serving appointments throughout the Holston Conference. Ed was an Eagle Scout as well as a U.S. Navy Veteran who served during the Korean War as a Pharmacists Mate. He married Carrie Lou Smelser in 1952 and together they ministered to everyone they could. Ed was a hardworking and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather & friend. He was a faithful member of Fountain City United Methodist Church.

Ed was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carrie Lou Smelser Carter; and brothers, J.D. and Jack Carter. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his daughters, Cheryl "Sherry" Ann Carter and husband Dan Misseri of Georgia and Martha Carol Routh and husband Bill of Knoxville; grandchildren, Rusty McCauley and wife Catalina, Carter Routh, Carol Ann Routh; great-grandchildren, Braelyn McCauley, Beckham McCauley, and Brilee Harper McCauley; brother, John David Carter and wife Rita; other extended family members and a host of friends.

A Graveside Service will be held Saturday, December 31st at Greenwood Cemetery at 11 am. The Memorial Service is at Fountain City United Methodist Church at 2 pm, with Rev. Dr. Randy Frye and Rev. John Jackson officiating. A Receiving of Friends will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed's memory to the Music Fund or Scholarship Fund at FCUMC, 212 Hotel Road, Knoxville, Tennessee 37918.
