William S. Downs, Sr. was born in 1730 in Orange County, Virginia to Sir Henry Downs and Lady Jane Douglas Downs. He married Phoebe Hogg (Hague/Hayne) Downs, and they had thirteen children: William Downs, Jr., Jonathan Downs, Joseph Downs, Hiram Downs, George Downs, Jane Downs Jamison, Elizabeth Downs Horton, Polly Downs, Sarah Downs Downs, Zilla Ann Downs Alston, Thomas David Downs, Henry Downs, and Mary Downs Griffin. William was an adjutant colonel in the Revolutionary Army, serving under General Gates, and was also one of the officers who founded the Order of the Cincinnati. After William's wife Phoebe passed away, he remarried to Polley Tilley Downs. William died at about age 72 in Tennessee where he is buried. I would appreciate any help in zeroing in on the exact location of his burial.
