Dean Thomas "Red H." Hartsock, 81, of Burlington died at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008, at his home.

Born Aug. 23, 1926, in Louisa County, he was the son of Clayton and Karen Morgan Hartsock. On Sept. 15, 1951, he married Marian Hartsock in Louisa County.

Mr. Hartsock worked many years as a car salesman in Burlington, first at Hawkeye Motor and later at Delzell Motors. He attended grade school at the rural Louisa Center School and graduated in 1944 from Wapello Consolidated High School.

After graduation, he joined the Army. He was sent to the Mariana Islands in the Pacific. He was with a cleanup crew at Iwo Jima and was with Company C, Combat Engineers on the invasion of Okinawa and was there at V-J Day. While still in the Pacific Islands, he signed for the occupation of West Germany. After this three-year tour of duty, he was discharged as staff sergeant. He attended Burlington Junior College and Rice University in Houston, Texas. While living in Texas and Louisiana, he was a salesman of safety equipment.

He was a member of Louisa Center Church, Columbus City, a lifetime Veteran's of Foreign Wars member, and a past member of the Moose Lodge. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.
