He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was the co-pilot of a B-17 Bomber in the 8th Air Force, the 385th Bombardment Group. Their plane was nicknamed "Satan's Mate". I have heard that it was the only B-17 to make a complete loop and still exist. During the war he fell in deeply in love with Dorothy May Faris. They wrote many letters back in forth during the war. They married in San Antonio, Texas and he was then off to war again. Together they had two children born in Illinois. William and Harriette. At his passing he had 4 grandchildren. Three girls and one boy. After his death, he also had four great-grandchildren, two girls and two boys.
