Norma Jean Harper, age 85, passed away on Christmas Eve morning, 2016, while at home with her family. She is survived by her husband, Donald James Harper, her two sons, Larry Harper and Kevin (Jean) Harper, and daughter, Terriann (Paul) Zeek.
Norma was born on October 19, 1931, in Phoenix, Arizona, and later moved to Modesto in 1945 when her parents, Robert and Melba Williams, purchased the Sonoma Market and later, the Oak Motel. She was married to Donald Harper on April 9, 1950 and celebrated 66 years of marriage this year. After designing her home on Oakwood Drive in 1958, she lived there for the rest of her life as a loving mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother dedicated to the welfare of her family. She was a deeply compassionate and highly artistic person, having created dozens of award-winning paintings, feathered ceramic models, and many other crafts.
A graveside service will be held January 3 at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery at 1pm. A dessert reception will follow at CrossPoint Community Church, 1301 12th St. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Community Hospice.
