Douglas Byron Mackey, 82, of Richland, passed away December 25, 2016 at Guardian Angel Homes in Richland Washington.
He was born August 30, 1934 in Negaunee, Michigan to Johan Gustaus Mackey (originally Maki) and Amy Alina (Baakki). His mother was the driving force behind their family moving to Longview, Washington on April fool’s day 1947. She did not want her 6 sons to end up working underground in the iron ore mines.
He married Shirley Mae Thomas on March 8, 1958 and moved to Richland where they settle and raised their three children. He worked at Hanford in the labs for then General Electric, when Battelle took over in 1965 He continued to work for them until his retirement.
Douglas enjoyed photography, computers and spending time with his family. His house was always open to his children and grandchildren. There was always at least one in residence. He shared his enjoyment of photography and computers with his family. Doug loved the Columbia Basin area and would walk the Columbia and Yakima Rivers. He captured the wildlife and the scenery of the area.
Douglas is survived by his brother, Lawrence M. Mackey; brother, Harold C. Mackey; brother, Gary G. Mackey; daughter, Robin Kesler; son, Chris Mackey (Elody); son, Mark Mackey; grandchildren, Amy Mackey, Alice Mackey, Kevin Kunkler, Kyle Kunkler (Jillian), Katrina Kesler, Brandy Kesler and Joshua Mackey. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Alexis, Daisy, Dillon and Sabrina.
Douglas was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Gordon Mackey; brother, Donald R Mackey and grandson, Mathew Kesler.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 1:00pm at Events at Sunset, 915 ByPass Hwy in Richland.
In lieu of flower the family request that donations be made to The Tri-Cities Chaplaincy, 1480 Fowler St. Richland WA.
