Delamer enlisted into the Union army as a 1st Lieutenant when he was 23 years old on 8-26-1861. He fought as a Captain in the Civil War. He was in the 40th OH Infantry, and was a part of Whitaker's Brig., Steedman's Division.

There is a monument to his Ohio unit at Chickamauga Battlefield in Georgia near Snodgrass Hill. He was discharged from Civil War 1865.

1870 census: Delamer is listed as a carriage maker, with estate and property worth $2,000.
