Erma Maxine Austin, 81, of Grand Island died on Monday, Dec. 26, 2016.
A celebration of Erma’s life will be at a later date.
Burial of ashes will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery near Pleasanton. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.
Mrs. Austin was born on Jan. 10, 1935, at rural Litchfield to John and Elsie (Ott) Cherry.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Dennis; and granddaughters, Katelyn and Jamie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph, whom she missed dearly; and four brothers, Melford, Marvin, Melvin and Kenneth Cherry.
Erma attended Buffalo and Custer County rural schools, graduating from Litchfield High School, Class of 1953. She taught rural school and continued her education at Kearney State College.
On Dec. 5, 1960, Erma married Ralph Austin in Doniphan. Because they wanted an adventure, the couple honeymooned in Arizona.
Erma went into food service and found she enjoyed it. She retired from Walnut Middle School after 20 years in the cafeteria.
Erma’s enjoyments included collecting owls, flower gardening and scrapbooking. She was a sports enthusiast, especially the Huskers.
