Robin Ivor Welch
Mar. 13, 1930 - Dec. 23, 2016
Resident of Mountain View

The beloved of God, Robin Ivor Welch, reposed December 23, 2016, with his family by his side.

Robin was born in Douglas, Arizona, on March 13, 1930 to Mamie and Ivor Welch. He is survived by his wife, Thalia; his children, Leeann Sanders, Nadine Floryancic, Cathleen Remenaric, and Brian Welch; his sisters, Helen Newick and Dorothy Bolander, and his loving grandsons, great-grandson, sons-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Robin spent a happy childhood in San Francisco, enjoying the outdoors with his family and graduating from Lincoln High School. Robin's studies at U.C. Berkeley, where he was a loyal brother in the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, were interrupted by the Korean War. On December 11, 1952, serving as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, Robin was in a jet crash; he emerged paralyzed from the waist down, never to walk again. But he was fine.

He went forward to receive his Bachelors, Masters, and PhD. degrees from UC Berkeley in Wildland Resource Management. Robin had a rewarding career working for Stanford Research Institute, teaching at Texas A&M University, managing the Western Regional Applications Program at NASA, Earth Satellite Corporation, was an expert witness on the Lockheed C-5A accident, and retired from the Lockheed Space Station Program.

Robin adored his family, was a devoted member of St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church, remarkable athlete, always a loyal brother of Ato, and a master teacher of hunter safety for the state of California. The title of Robin's autobiography, "In Search of Eagles," is taken from his favorite bible verse: "even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."

A traditional orthodox funeral liturgy will be held at St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church, 161 N. Murphy, Ave., Sunnyvale, Ca, at 11:00am on Thursday, December 29. Immediately following, Robin will be interred at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 22555 Cristo Rey Drive, Los Altos, with military honors. Please join the family for lunch afterwards at Michaels of Shoreline Restaurant, 2690 N. Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View. Please RSVP Thalia if you are able to join us for lunch. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the paralyzed veterans association of America.
